The Teens Resisting Urban Trans/Homophobia research project is a partnership between Wilfrid Laurier University and Planned Parenthood Toronto to explore trans/homophobia in sexually diverse youth. The overall research project aims to answer such questions as “what drives homophobia/transphobia among youth?”, “what are the differences in how youth from different communities, sexual orientations, genders, and ethno-racial and cultural backgrounds experience trans/homophobia?,”, and “what prevention strategies and/or programs can be implemented to ameliorate and enhance well being and health of sexually diverse youth in the face of trans/homophobia?”. It is the goal of this research to shed light on these questions and inform a range of anti-homophobia/transphobia prevention strategies.
To inform the larger research program the researchers believe working with youth will enable the research to more accurately meet its goals and objectives, and ultimately, help tackle the problem of trans/homophobia. This research project has multiple phases. The first phase of the research is a pilot study that intends to situate the research into its context and gather information that will help guide and facilitate the larger research initiative.
Funding for the seed phase of this project is provided by the Centre for Urban Health Initiatives (CUHI) at the University of Toronto and The Ontario HIV Treatment Network (OHTN).
