Community-Based Research

In an effort to continue to expand our knowledge and engage the community in new and interesting ways, Planned Parenthood Toronto has undertaken a commitment to community-based research (CBR) projects.

Research in community-based organizations is becoming increasingly popular.  One of the reasons that community organizations can now undertake research is that there has been a transformation in the culture of academia to strengthen collaborative research relationships with community partners.  Community-based research (CBR) has emerged as an alternative way of doing research, which integrates education and social action to improve health and reduce health inequalities.

Research evidence complements — not replaces — the many other forms of data and knowledge which go into making decisions in community-based settings. Research evidence helps organizations like Planned Parenthood Toronto in the planning and evaluation of programming and services and in ensuring that we are making the best decisions possible to improve the health of our clients.

CBR intervention research is based on two primary assumptions which are improving health outcomes and reducing inequalities.  Community Health Centres like Planned Parenthood Toronto are ideally positioned to undertake such research because they are a key source of community infrastructure through which to deliver a range of integrated community-based services and to respond to health-related community concerns.

What is Community-Based Research?
Defined as a collaborative approach to research, CBR equitably involves all partners in the research process and recognizes the unique strengths that each brings.  CBR begins with a research topic of importance to the community with the aim of combining knowledge and action for social change to improve community health and eliminate health disparities.
